Okonomiyaki (literary, grilled as you like with your favorite ingredients) is a highly popular Japanese savory pancake dish and a soul food of both Osaka and Hiroshima. It shares a close resemblance to Korean buchimgae (chijimi). In the traditional downtown areas of Tokyo, a rather unique variation called “monjayaki” exists. Asakusa is home to numerous monjayaki restaurants, including at least three that share the name “Tsukushi.” However, you must never ask the owners about the relationship between these same-named shops. Doing so will surely sour their mood; there must be some deep, unspoken history behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tucked away in a narrow alley between Tanuki Street and Shokutsu Street, which run east to west, this particular “Tsukushi” is one of the most inconspicuous monjayaki joints in Asakusa. Yet, that is precisely what makes it such a relaxing place to unwind. It is the perfect spot to soak in an old-school atmosphere reminiscent of Japan’s post-war Showa reconstruction era, long before the area became teeming with international tourists. The owner may seem blunt and unfriendly at first glance, but there is no need to worry\u2014She is simply on guard against rowdy, disruptive drunks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
