One late evening in June 1859, the Court, thinking of rebellious Neapolitans, was panic-stricken when hundreds of mutinying Swiss were approaching in a riot. What happened? In 1848 the Swiss Federal Council abolished the Foreign Service but tolerated the contracts with Naples. In 1859, because of her neutrality, Switzerland forbade flying the Swiss flags in Italy. Not all soldiers, however, accepted the removal of the Swiss cross and wanted the King to restore it. A furious General Schumacher went to meet the drunken mutineers and gave orders to wait on the Campo di Marte for the King\u2019s answer. The Queen, fearless as usual, watched the ghostly scene from her balcony. At dawn, after a rioting night, the mutineers were encircled by the loyal Swiss who, as they refused to surrender, gunned them down. After this incident the King made it optional for the Swiss to stay in his service. A lot went home, many stayed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

a part of the Swiss Guard mutinied, and while the king mollified them by promising to redress their grievances, General Alessandro Nunziante gathered his troops, who surrounded the mutineers and shot them down. The incident resulted in the disbanding of the whole Swiss Guard, at the time the strongest bulwark of the Bourbon dynasty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
